Hey Alex, that is a great stuff in your blog.

I totally agree with you in this article. I am personally a follower of “work smart, not hard”. I do believe that best ideas are always on the surface, and the more you hustles the more the best ideas get overlooked. The other thing, I believe is that it’s often worth to get around obstacles then keep struggling with them. It’s always smarter to find a way to go around the problems than go against them.

Hi Alex!

What a great post! It resonated a lot with how I feel about work and about Gary’s approach too :).

I agree with you in that hustling for long periods of time is unsustainable. It can be a good approach for short sprints, but then you’d need some recovery time in-between such sprints. However, my life is more ‘marathon like’ and it requires a totally different technique.

But somehow, I still haven’t found peace with myself not working hard enough. The perfectionist in me is still talking too loudly. Working on that and Tara Brack helps a lot with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekHwMvjIubQ .

Love this! I think defining ones own personal “It” before embarking on any start up journey is key for success. It’s also important for co-founders to spend a lot of time sharing and exploring how aligned their “Its” are early in their relationship.

I agree with you on the fact that we all have to find out what our “It” is and then work passionately towards achieving it.

Some entrepreneurs who follow the “hustle” chant do so based on what drives others, not what drives them. They want to sound or be seen as trendy and cool, so they adopt it.

I’ve always had a negative feeling towards the term, so I never use it. Instead I say “I’m working hard and smart towards my set goals.” Sounds a lot more inspiring for me than saying “I’m hustling.”

Great article, Alex, and I appreciate how you shared your personal “it”. We’re too engrossed with hustling because people buy the term so much. And since they equate hustle as hard work towards your dream, NOT hustling is like slacking off. You’re right. It’s not all about hustle; it can be not about it at all. Working at a pace you know that would work for you is just it. No more hustling.

I agree with every single word here. Hustle is not my glass of wine either and it has the quality of making me stressed every time I read it. Me don’t like it. Life is way more than hustling anything, I want to enjoy my path, just in case it doesn’t last too long.

I’m also a big Gary V fan, starting with his Wine Library days. That said I think you raise valid points about the mantra of “hustle” versus most entrepreneurs reality.

I’ve experienced burnout first hand that led to some unexpected health issues. Now I approach building businesses from a more holistic approach, including business and personal goals vs. just growing, growing, growing. It’s still hard work and long hours but without the guilt of not being everywhere and doing everything 24/7.
