Nice post, Alex.

At Brutal Pixie, I purposely decided to set a 200-year vision. It's enormous. It's way bigger than me. Right now I'm the only full time employee.

But part of the the reason I did it is because playing a long game forces you to be patient. It forces you to act like a custodian, not an owner. It gives me the freedom to say, you know what, nights and weekends are life too so I'm going to act like I have a job and not a vocation. And it forces you to deal more effectively with downturns. It's not critical that every year doubles revenue because over a 200-hundred year trajectory that's just dangerous and silly.

More startup founders would do well to look at the long view, because they'd find patience more easily. Haha

I hope you surf a lot more these days.

Cheers

Perfect timing for me on this post as my impatience with finishing a new product has been growing. A couple more weeks really isn't going to matter. Thank you!

Another helpful post! I really enjoy your content, thank you for posting. I had a little disquietude with the language, threw me off in a professional setting. But I enjoyed the rest of the message. Thanks :)

This is really great content. I particularly like the idea of being cautious of "arbitrary deadlines" as well as the concept of applying patience learned in other areas of my life. For a person experiencing the start-up culture for the first time, your writings have really helped. Keep it up.

I also grew up surfing and can attest the ocean truly does not give a damn about your schedule. I relate the moments of blissfully sitting patiently for a wave to meditation. When I feel impatient, I will stop what I am doing and just focus on my breathing.
In business I work as a QA for an ad agency. My job is to stop/slow the process if I see any issues. It is far better to work hard and get things right than to work hard but be forced to correct mistakes.
