Hi Alex, thank you for taking time to write the article. I believe you missed two important points (both mentioned in famous Netflix Values slides btw) — 1) pay your employees the top 10% in the industry/location. This will remove monetary reason from the table and cut off headhunters. 2) Same goes with titles: CEO should also make sure company never promotes too late. If your junior dev is teaching others, promote right now, period (happened to me twice). These two reasons were the reasons why I left all my past workplaces. I was either (often, greatly) underpaid, or I was doing next job level's work and company did nothing about it for too long.

After you announce you are giong to leave, it's funny how some manager think they can throw money at you to keep you leaving, but they didn't care the last time they didn't give out raises to anyone. When I give notice, I've already "moved on", so too late to offer me a raise now.

The importance is treating and making sure that employees feel like they are important to the organization. Some are going to leave, its just the way it is. Its like the story of the sower and the reaper in the bible. Some just don't stay. Great post Alex.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Alex! As always very helpful.
How do you encourage your employees to implement their own initiatives and generate new ideas?
I've noticed its something hard for me, but trying to find ways to do this.
