Something that I think needs extra emphasis is:

the perception of value of the reader.

You guys are not being altruistic, but it can be spun that way pretty easily. You are going the Google route, give access to the best information and the best software for free with no reciprocation expected. The reader places immediate value on this information, as its a resource to be harnessed.

This places you in a positive light in the readers mind. You do a good job informing the reader what your actual goal as a company is and eventually their needs will align with your service.

WHEN (not if, everyone needs customer support) that time happens, guess who is in the forefront of the brain. Those awesome guys who have been helping the reader learn for all that time.

Anyone who says that content marketing to your personal strengths, even if they are outside the scope of the business, is a waste of time doesn't understand the first thing about the small world we live in.

Kudos on this and the support blog both, you guys are knocking it out of the park here.

Dude. You just completely broke it down completely. Today's consumer is quite finicky and savvy. They place great importance on a company that can provide value for them in multiple ways, as opposed to just one.

Hi Alex, just to let you know - thanks to Groove blog and the ebook (which is awesome) I also put your tool high on my list.

I wish we had discovered you guys a year ago when we signed up for ZenDesk. Now once we've made the knowledge center, set up macros etc... it would take time to make a shift (and make the whole time adjust to new software) but if we ever decide to, we will definitely give you a try!

keep up the good stuff on the blog.

Thanks again Alex. In fact, this is exactly how our company ended up using Groove. My co-founder sent me a link one day (very early on in our dev cycle) to your startup journey blog and I started reading.....and reading.....and reading. I even went as far as starting to categorize your blog in a Google sheet becuase the content was so good.

As we built Posto into something real and started to gain some traction, traffic and users, we needed a quick, easy and super functional helpdesk software and naturally choose Groove - and we love it.

Appreciate the great lesson and reminder here.

All the best.

Thanks, Alex, for the blog. It is awesome.

We are email marketing platform and our blog was all about email marketing. Recently, I wrote a few blog post about our business: culture, hiring process and competing with big players in the market. I was surprised by the reaction. People loved it. Now they can relate to our company easier than ever.

That's a great strategy to stay in people's heads :)

This is one of the first posts I've read from you Alex where I knew where it was going just from the title, but I still think it's extremely important and, as you say, might not be as obvious to everyone depending on the background. Right now, we're working on a wide-appeal blog for the top of the funnel, but have plans to implement an 'Academy' sub-site that is much more focused on prospects in the middle of the funnel looking for specific solutions.

Nice to get some validation that the technique is working majorly for someone!

Look forward to the Q&A today :)

This post makes so much sense, Alex! I've been thinking quite a bit about this issue recently and your post came along at the right time.

When you restrict yourself to writing only the type of content that is related to your product, you're leaving a lot of opportunity on the table. If you have a customer support software, you needn't write only about customer support. If you have an accounting software, you certainly shouldn't write only about accounting. People need these solutions, but only a small percentage of prospects will actually be interested in reading content on that very specific topic.

Did you do any research or thinking on the choice of top of funnel blog? Was entrepreneurship easy because of your own journey or did you target it because you saw it as a natural feeder to customer support? Cheers

Thanks a lot Alex. Had this doubt as well but now is perfectly clarified.

The best part in my opinion:

"To add value to their lives, even if they’re not considering becoming a customer today, next week or next month. But one day, many of those readers will need new support software."
