Great interview Nathan, I met you at Microconf a few years ago and it amazing to see your growth. I'm just getting into email marketing for my business and I wonder if you had a resource on how to write good emails. Or is it just doing it and learning from trial and error?

This doesn't get said enough in all the SaaS/startup blogs but Groove and ConvertKit are both great examples of products that reached their success with two primary ingredients - focus and time. I've been following Nathan for over 5 years now and it's been very educational and humbling to read his blog and emails, where he was very open about his struggles to find the right approach to building his company.

As a part-time wanterpreneur myself I've been struggling with complete lack of growth after hacking a simple MVP, like many suggest. And it was after reading a very honest and self-reflective blog post by Nathan about wondering out loud on whether to shut down ConvertKit (part of which was included in this article) I finally realized that I too lacked focus and dedication to my idea and hence didn't see any progress. That helped me reign in my ambitions and put on hold a lot of "side projects" that were only tangentially related to the core product.

Sure, I am still working on my product part-time but now I am very deliberate with what I spend my time on, which feature gets attention, which customer request makes the most sense in the grander product roadmap. And yes, I keep reminding myself that things don't magically work overnight (heck, even over 6 months!). I keep reminding that it took Groove TWO YEARS of prototyping, contracting, and hustling to get to the point at which their awesome block started years back.

tl;dr: Two main ingredients that will actually get you to growth are FOCUS and TIME (with a few others like passion sprinkled on).

Hi Nathan I saw in the article that you doubled-down on Convert Kit. I'm in a tricky place right now, trying to grow while bootstrapping. Do you have a strategy to determine whether or not you should double-down on an idea? I'm at that crossroads right now, I can't go much further without an investor. Many thanks Jayne

Hey Nathan, it's totally crazy how you're able to grow a company in such a saturated market with a lot of BIG players like Mailchimp, Aweber, GetResponse, etc-etc.

How do you define your USP against every other email marketing service and how much do you think this USP contributes to your company growth compared to every other marketing tactic?

PS: you rock, mate! :)

Thanks Alex, this is one of the very insightful articles. I have a question for Nathan.

@Nathan How did you come up with the idea of not having a free plan? what motivated you to go against what all other saas companies did. And finally how did it work for you? you are still holding to it.

I would truly appreciate if you can share your thoughts over this.

Really great interview and responses. I love ConvertKit. I first heard about it on Pat Flynn's SmartPassiveIncome podcast where he interviewed you, Nathan. I knew then I would be using it in the near future. When I finally checked it out, I was blown away by how well it simplifies the must-haves that ConfusionSoft and MailChimp complexify and just get wrong. If felt like it was designed just for me! It's fun to learn about your process with it all and look behind the scenes. Great tips on writing and networking, too!
