Hi Alex,

An inspiring article. you mentioned quite a lot of things that have affected me in the past like having to many co founders, not focussing by wanting to solve diverse request from customers and prospects to the detriment of the company. Anyway, I am happy Rick overcame these challenges at Unbounce.

I sure got some helpful insight from your article.

Alex, thanks for this post and for this opportunity to connect with Rick.
Hey Rick, thanks for some really insightful comments. Here is my quick one.

We are two partners sometimes struggling with 'how to prioritize features and others to drop' since we are self-funded. Any directions or online sources where we can have a 'features-matrix' and then strike off things?

Hey Alex thanks for this post! Unbounce is a great example of using content marketing early on to establish an audience pre-launch. It's a great reminder to focus on customer pains and 'jobs' first, before getting into the technical features required of the prodoct.

Loving the interview series! Keep it up.

Hey Rick, amazing interview thanks for doing this! It's amazingly obvious how important content marketing is. We have a very small team (literally just 2 of us right now), but it's become apparent that neither of us are really any good at producing content every day...at all. I've tried so many times, but it never seems to work out... I have to imagine, because this just isn't my strong suit.

This isn't at all me complaining that I don't want to do the work (we work crazy hard on every other aspect of the product), it's just that me and my business partner are just not skilled in that way...in the way that Oli is. I can't imagine putting together a 15,000 word piece of content or writing an eBook over night! haha the guy is a machine!

Do you recommend we find someone to hire who is particularly strong in this area to handle our content marketing ongoing? Or is it something we kinda just need to force ourselves to do, even if we're not very good at it and find it extremely painful to do on a day-to-day basis? (edit)....In other words, what would you guys have done if you didn't have an Oli on board?

Thanks!

Hi Rick, thanks for the insightful interview. I'm interested in knowing if you have a traditional in-house sales team now or you are still replying on content marketing to acquire new customers. Also share your experience with the paid acquisition channels (Adwords, etc)

Alex - Thanks for putting this together.

This is a great article...thanks both to Alex and Rick !!!

You've highlighted the core of what causes so many startups to fail.

1. Over investing in product development before knowing what customers will actually pay for...not merely "want" (whether via surveys, interviews, MVP, etc.)

2. Failure to SELL! You have to sell obsessively...even before you have a product! (startups die from lack of customers, not lack of ideas, products, programmers or investors)

There is so often an arrogance of belief that one knows what the market wants better than actual customers do...and once built the product will "sell itself"...
