Hey Matthieu,

I already love the Groove blog, but it's even better to get introduced to other awesome people along the way, so it was great to read your interview. We're in a similar position in that we've currently got a slow but steadily growing user base of largely free accounts, but we're seeing that the way for us to reach revenue goals is going to be largely based around direct sales to companies.

As we are an extremely small team on the sales and marketing side, do you have any advice for balancing brand promotion (blogging, content creation, community interaction) and direct sales (cold calls/emailing, lead nurturing, prospecting/profiling of companies as potential clients) with a finite amount of work hours each week in your team?

Thanks in advance if you get the chance to reply!

Love this you guys! Although I'm obviously a bit biased, I really enjoyed reading the whole story from a new perspective. So happy to see Mention kicking ass and taking names! Great advice too, Mat. :)

Hey Matthieu,

Glad to hear all this! For inbound marketing, how do you choose your content? Are you studying Google SEO trends, or is there a segment that you're focused on?

Cheers,

Hi Mathieu, great interview, very insightful (thanks Alex). I'm Antoine the CXO at www.Clubble.io, a startup from Lyon, France (we bridge the gap between a Slack team and its email-reliant clients). What would be your best piece of advice for a young French startup aiming at the US market? Merci bien !

Hi Matthieu, thank you for sharing your story. As part of a European based SaaS start-up I appreciate your input on markets, culture and especially languages.

We are still at an early stage but have decided to develop our app in different languages, but reading your comments on the complexity it makes me want to challenge our decision.

Would it have been better for Mention to start with only an English App and at a later stage to develop French, German and Spanish translations of the App?
Would you, in hindsight, stay clear of all other languages except English and never develop local language version of your app?
Which data/KPI’s would you recommend me to use to determine if my customer base needs local language versions of my App?

@Alex: Thanks for adding a European perspective on SaaS with this post and a huge THANK YOU for sharing your time and knowledge. Much appreciated!

Focus first on the customer and everything else will fall in line - product development, conversion, retention, and revenue. Did you notice a quick improvement on retention and revenue when you made customer success a new priority? Or was it a slower improvement?

Matthieu, congratulations on your success to date. I agree with your endorsement of Jason Lemkin's blog, it's rocket-fuelled SaaS learnings for free for those keen to learn!

I'm curious as to how early on your kicked off your blog and what your strategy (if any!) was, and how effective (or not!) it was in the early days. (Very interesting to see your use of encouraging virality in the dropbox like referral piece).

Thanks for sharing.
