Hi Len! Thanks for the great articles! We too use Groove + Slack. I'm curious... what phone system do you use? We're currently using Vonage, but have been researching others - thinking of making a switch. There are just some features Vonage doesn't have that we'd like. Would love to hear what others are using.

Hi Len,

I didn't see anything about any video conferencing. Do you use Google Hangouts or Skype? I have been working remotely for over 15 years and my company is 100% remote like Groove. We use Google Hangouts for our daily standups. It's nice to see folks "face to face" and helps with team building.

We use Hipchat over Slack solely because of the ability to have free guest access. (I know we are bucking the trend here.. everyone is moving to Slack.)

Another key to successful remote work is to judge your employees on results so you need to have clear goals and objectives for each employee. (Results oriented work environment.)

Remote work is near and dear to my heart since I have been doing it long before it became popular. Thanks for writing about it. The more success stories the better!

Great article. Thanks for sharing this. I love the daily standup idea. How do you get your daily ticket count? Do you have a trick for doing this easily through a Groove report? Or is it a manual count?

Thanks for sharing, Len! I'm happy to hear that Groove uses all of the tools I fully endorse, and use everyday, as a freelancing community manager. I can't tell you how important communication is for remote teams. Along with a daily standup, I recommend having a weekly retro that goes over the highs and lows of the week. This can be done together as a team through Slack (assuming everyone is online at the same time) or individually reported for folks to add-on to. It's a good opportunity to celebrate wins and prioritize goals for the next week. And I personally love the time it allows to reflect.

Keep up the great work, guys! I'm looking forward to the next read :)

Hi Len, great tips. I am a Groove + Slack + Pivotal Tracker user too. :)

I also work @Perch - a true virtual visual watercooler. Instead of just seeing a green dot on your screen, you actually can see if your coworkers are available and instantly connect with them live, work alongside them or even just say/wave hello - as if you were sitting right beside them. Would love for you to check it out!
