Very interesting post. Thank you for sharing your insigths.

What are some strategies to filter candidates when using job boards like WeWorkRemotely or RemoteOk (which get a lot of traffic)? We are getting many applicants but most of it is just noise and low/average quality applications.

Thanks

Great topic. I would also be interested in hearing more as suggested in the previous comment.

I am the operations manager for a remote team of strategic event planners and managers. We work from across the USA but come together on site for site visits and events in production across the world. We have been lucky enough to find some great employees from networking contacts, word of mouth referrals, and previous independant contractors.

The last round of hiring we went a different route and posted in 5 cities (2 different categories each) on craigslist. Although it caused a lot of worthless candidates, we were blessed to find a lady that is a perfect fit for our team, some free lance stuff and a personality that mixes well with our team. This is important in our line of work since we are brought together during high stress times.

I would be interested to see what other options are out there for remote workers looking or a place to search for employees that are not strictly coding or programming in nature.

Thanks for writing about this - as always, you bring up some great topics in the startup journey.

I do have some follow-up questions from this post, which I wish were longer.

1) What were some challenges to training people to be good remote workers? I'm imagining things like getting people used to phone meetings, and the technology needed to keep in constant communication, as well as the self-motivation to get things done without people at the office looming in the background.

2) You mention that everyone on your team has either worked on a distributed team, or been a freelancer or entrepreneur in the past. That last item makes me curious. What benefits do you get from having (former? ongoing?) entrepreneurs on your team?

WeWorkRemotely.com does seem to be an effective job board. There are numerous other job boards focusing on remote work such as https://remoteok.io/ and http://www.workingnomads.co/jobs. Job boards can be a great option for attracting developers who are actively looking for a new position. Unfortunately many of the best developers aren't actively looking and would be considered passive candidates. That's where a good recruiting firm can help, and that's what I do through my firm HomeCoders.com. I am a big believer in remote work, and I agree with you Alex, it is so crucial to find people who are not only great workers but are also great "remote" workers.
