I have to admit, personality quizzes are fun.
I've taken my fair share - whether it was for fun to kill 2-3 minutes and find out which taco I have most in common with (true story) or for a website like Ramit Sethi's that did the EXACT same thing that you mentioned above - and suggested products to me that he offers that matched my "personality" from the quiz.

It was clever.
And yes, I did check out his products and reads per his suggestion and they were spot on.

"By gating the quiz results with a lead capture, any brand can grow their email list easily by exchanging the quiz results for an audience’s contact information."

I'm really surprised at this recommendation. I *hate* it when quiz results are held for ransom this way. I feel deceived when I spend my time on a quiz that's supposed to be useful or fun, and then you spring this on me at the end.

If you have to resort to trickery to get my e-mail address, then I'm not going to trust you with it. And how do you think I feel about the company that wasted my time with a bait-and-switch? Is growing your e-mail list worth the poor experience you're delivering to a prospective customer?
