A very enriching post Alex.
I just had one question regarding adding new members to a startup team: I have a startup where we are 3 co-founders with sharing equal responsibilities and equity so far. But one of the co-founders is not holding up to his responsibilities and is very slow. So, we are trying to hire a member to our team to speedup that work. So my question to you is in this case if we hire a new member how equity must be distributed among all the co-founders and the new member?

Great post! A friend told me about your blog. Part of the reason we created our start up was to help people with building the right team for their startup. Again, thanks for the information. I'm sure it will help us along the way.

Hey Alex, thanks for this post. Once again, very insightful. We've been working with an internal developer to code the first iteration of our app, but I'm wondering how you made the decision to farm this out to MojoTech and what that experience/cost output was like for you.

Thanks again!

Thanks for that brilliant post. Pragmatism is critical when we start a business and I'm impressed how you didi manage to balance short urgency and long trends. Also impressed that you realized how human factors are strategic for the biz. Even in a start up there should be a HR person, the CEO.

Really great post Alex. Have been reading your blog for sometime. We are now experimenting with a part-time design contractor. It's been one week and it was amazing the amount of work he did in 10 hours. Yes, it was larger hourly rate but way better than hiring someone on full time at the moment. Your post came at a very good time to confirm what I was doing.

Another well crafted post Alex!

I built a lot of teams and made a lot of mistakes in the past. Building a team and hiring the right people is such a complex and huge task that you can never cover every aspect you'll encounter along the way.

I think the most important thing is to put your ego aside and to think about the consequences of your actions. Both from a business perspective and a human one.

Thank you Alex for the great post! I'm wondering if you can share how you hired your first remote employees. I assume it's a bit easier when you have an established company, but it might be challenging when you are in a very beginning stage. How did you advertise the positions - just by using your network, by hiring a recruiting agency, by posting on job sites like Indeed or Monster, by using freelance sites like Odesk or Elance, by any other means? If you tried different methods, would you be able to share your experience with each of them?

This is really in depth, awesome stuff! I'm in the HR/Recruiting world right now but love Startups... This is an interesting intersection of the two.

Thanks!
