It is interesting to read this article in 2022 after a wave of covid restrictions and the forced transition of most employees to remote work. Of course, this will contribute to the structuring of corporate culture outside the office and the conscious rejection of part of offline communication. I think that in the end this will have a positive impact on the productivity growth of at least a certain type of companies.

Great post! I often think about why advisors and naysayers claim that having an entirely remote workforce can't happen. Just as a local workforce would have a few bad seeds or unproductive outliers, a remote workforce can have this as well -- but that's why employment is at will. You let go of those that are unproductive. We can communicate in so many ways now a days that I don't feel that the need to be in the same office is a requirement. Neither is working from the specific hours of 9-5. (or 8-6!). Obviously you need to work according to timelines, but if working on your project at midnight suits you better than working on your project at 9a, then by al means that shouldn't be frowned upon.

Great post as always, and we are facing the same challenge. I'm just wondering how far you can get with being remote-only. I'm sure it works for 10, 20, or 50 employees, but once you get to 200 or 1,000..? Do you know a single public (or even C-or-later-round stage) company that is purely remote? Also, I've heard the "hybrid doesn't work" argument a few times, but then there are companies like Basecamp who seem to be making it work out. They are big advocates of remote working, but they also have a very cool headquarters: https://basecamp.com/office. Somehow I can't help liking the idea of a "home team", but I'm also worried about my remote team feeling like second-class.

I think remote is sensible. Why make your employees up and leave their home for you? Alex, I'd be interested to read what tools you guys use at Groove to handle remote work :)

Hey Alex. I love the post. It really shows the difference from the usual approach to business decisions and their impact on the business team involved.
A bit off-topic, the email subscription popup on mobile seems a to be fixed pixel size, it doesn't scale to the width of the page on my phone. Just one of those little things ;)
Loving Groove's growth story as usual.

Another great post, Alex! There are so many things I love about being a remote employee, and it is a fantastic way to attract talent :). I do highly recommend having regular meetups because it is nice to be able to meet (in person) the people you work with daily, at some point. Look forward to reading about how Groove rocks being 100% distributed.

Alex, thank you so much for sharing this. I am being faced with the same decision as I only have a 3 person company at the moment. Both of my other workers are remote, but I have been getting push-back locally about having an office location. I run a Digital Agency and sometimes I have to meet with clients at Starbucks or Restaurants or at their office. I do see that in a Local small town people "Expect" you to have an office and don't think that you are legitimate or BIG enough to handle projects because you are remote. How do you handle those perceptions?
