Interesting post. I think I made all of the mistakes you mention about connecting with mentors. I would assumed that a mentor would likely work with a founder in exchange of equity, financial reward or for the fact that this founder has a great potential of being successful.
Conventional wisdom always talk about mentors in relation to a small amount of equity you give in exchange of the help. I would have never thought about being helpful to them would matter. Great insight and thanks for putting it into context for easy understanding.

Alex, one of the toughest things is getting someone to agree to help advise or mentor you. Thanks for the insight. The tips all make sense. A question I have is, how does one begin to search for their mentor/advisor? Any tips around that?

One thing to add, reaching out to your network to help you find people you can learn from is invaluable. My greatest mentor in the area I’m working on breaking into came from asking Facebook if anyone knew someone in that area of expertise. I did what Alex suggested and found a way that I could help him in exchange for advice. I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t just reach out 🙂

Thanks Alex, I read your blog as often as I can and I haven’t been disappointed yet. I know a lot of people that would be lucky to have you as a mentor

When I saw the title I was excited to read this one. Some good information in this post. Thanks for sharing! I think it can be a little intimidating asking for help from someone you don’t know that well. Your approach makes it a little easier.
