The flipside of this question about what potential employees (or customers) are gaining by working for one company is also what they're potentially sacrificing.

Obtaining money and prestige can enable us to do some cool stuff, but it can also rob us of other REALLY cool--and important--stuff. Many people seem to miss the second part. In other words: it's just as important to not only look at what one company is offering as a plus, but also to look at what doors are being closed, both personally and professionally. Often, the threat of sacrificing something really important can be more powerful than the promise of gaining something else.

Alex, I'm liking everything I'm reading about Groove. I think one of the most important parts of being part of a smaller company is to be incredibly flexible with taking on different tasks. I also like smaller companies because an employee's contributions are less likely to be lost in the "machine".

At the risk of being the squeaky wheel, I applied for the Customer Success Team Member job. I hope to hear from you,

Thanks,
Stefan Arnold

Alex, you took the words right out of my mouth (and made them sound way better ;) For the last few months my fiancé, Jackson, has been working on a new project called Job Portraits: http://jobportraits.com. He helps startups give a clear picture of what makes working for them special by asking thoughtful questions about impact, culture, expectations...just what you've outlined above. The resulting "job portrait" is a visual story, posted on Medium, and designed to spread quickly across the social web. The first few companies he's worked with have been excited to have numerous "ideal candidates" come find them after seeing their post :)

The funny personal part of all this is that I have been looking for my next "real" job for the last couple months and keep coming up against the thing @pawelniewie:disqus and @jessicarudder:disqus mentioned: I'm just not a "big company" kind of gal. In fact, I might not even be a small startup kind of gal. I'm really an incorrigible "start it from the ground up" kind of girl. And that's why I decided last week to go all-in and help Jackson make Job Portraits the best it could be.

He and I started a company together a few years ago (now ended) and one of the things I learned was that, in some ways, I was more excited about creating the culture of the company than the company itself. So now I hope that by helping companies tell the story of their culture and exciting positions, I might also have the opportunity to help them make their work environment even more awesome. We're in the midst of redoing the Job Portraits website right now to outline all these offerings.

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your thoughts, which so clearly show us we're not crazy and other (very smart) people are seeing the same things we are. I've always found startup life hard because of its lack of traditional validation—feeling in synch with peers is as good as it gets :)
