One of the more inspirational posts / stories I’ve read about an entrepreneur in a long time. Thanks for sharing. Found myself on the Foundation’s email list a while ago and had always wondered what the backstory was. I can totally relate to this concept of, “Hey, if these guys can do it, why can’t I?” It sounds so simple, but it took me a long time to get to that point and I wished I would have gotten started in entrepreneurship even earlier. Really appreciate you guys putting your heads together and pressing publish 🙂

Thanks Andy – and thanks Alex for bringing this to us.

You mentioned the time you realised you didn’t have a “true passion” for Referral Squirrel.

I mention it as I’m interested in your take on balancing your sense of purpose (that inner ‘why’ that drives you) with the instinctive opportunism that is a hallmark of entrepreneurs.

We’re at the very start of launching our own bootstrapped business (in fact, I cut my work down to 3 days a week in October…) and right now, I’m getting a little stuck between:

* doing something I know will make money but I know my heart’s not really in it
vs
*doing something I know feels right (a purpose driven thing I guess) but which is a lot less certain – for example, we’re not sure what kind of market there is out there for us.

Have you wrestled with this, and if so, what did you conclude?

Hey Andy! Great Story!- it gives us a hope that there is a light at the end of tunnel!

I have a question if you can help? We have a SAAS product that generates 5k per month totally bootstrap. But now we are looking forward to upscale it. We have leads but are not getting converted. We have a positive customer Reviews so far!

Any tips on how we can go from 5k to 20k per month is appreciated!

How does the referral squirrel thing work? I have seen realtors offer a free coffee or pumpkin etc for their old sales through local business via postcards but I have never understood how that translates into sales.

Wow, great story. I think it was an advantage for him to come from a non-tech area with a strong work ethic – like an immigrant who has to work harder and learn new things. Being hungry to be successful is a huge advantage and so many of us that are born into ideal situations are soft. Curious if you see it the same way.
