When I got interviewed for my first remote job in SaaS, I had no setup. I was asked a similar question, and responded as such but that I would make it work even if I had to rent a private office outside my home. I ended up repurposing a very small room in my house just barely big enough for a comfy chair and a standup desk and have no regrets. I just celebrated 2 years and am finally moving up into a bigger home with a dedicated office so no more cramped space for me :)

Either way, I think that's the key--a dedication to make it work no matter what is absolutely vital to the successful remote work lifestyle.

In addition to set-up (which is a great question), I also look to see if they are proactive communicators.
It's important for remote team members to be proactive - we need them reaching out when they need help and also be great about providing info that would benefit the team

Hi Alex,

Good one. I shall remember that for future. We recently started working with a remote salesperson for a new project & he actually raised that point to show how organised his home office was.

If you're ever in a position to hire technical resources this service is definitely worth the cost: https://tests4geeks.com/ - you can save a TON of time by only interviewing the A graders.

Cheers!

Massive corner desk with a main 39" 4k screen for tons of text space. Two smaller monitors (which I suggest you supply the funds to upgrade) and Blazing fast 6 core processor tapping into a wickedly smoking NVMe SSD with 32GB's of memory to pass off to whatever VM's seem convenient at the moment. Oh, and 4 coasters for multiple beverages.

Thanks for asking ;)
