My friend/mentor Vijay taught me THE lesson that changed how I think about marketing. He said &quot;Do customer support before marketing. You need to learn the customer&#039;s language.&quot; 

I had just joined @ZapStitch in Feb 2014 as the first non dev guy. Vijay being a entrepreneur friend of Satya (our founder) were asking me for a broad framework of my understanding of marketing and take it from there. 

As I started drawing am mind map and tree of marketing objectives, campaigns and action items, 

I was abruptly stopped midway by Vijay. He said, this is good but how do you know what to market? For example in case of blog, What will you write in the blog? 

I started talking about the pain point of manual data entry the product was solving and such. All valid points but there was a missing piece which is at the core of every good marketer and which drives the startup forward. 

Spending hours and hours in customer support made me understand what a customer feels when using our product. What he/she feels when the product doesnt work, what is their life without it... Hearing about it first hand and working with customers is something every...every marketer should do.]]></description>
