Number 4 was the most relevant to me as I've just started working on web content for a startup (www.rumbletalk.com) that's been around for a couple years. The blog so far hasn't had much of a strategy other than SEO. So although the blog has been around, the bad news is that it needs a new face. Any advice for revitalizing a blog? It feels like starting something new late in the game.

Great post! Glad to read #1. about listening.
It is sooo important, but I think we learn it with time and experience. Faster we notice this is valuable for us and our business faster we build audience for our marketing actions. One of the firsts thing on start is try some social listening tools (i.e. Brand24.net which I prefer and use successfully) and have some help with tracking mentions, opinions, feedback, customers and competitors, new in our niche. Thanks to some stats, measuring influence, reach or sentiment we know how to react, what are our customer's expectations and it is so much easier to make right moves.

Glad to read #4) "Start Content Marketing Much, Much Sooner". We've only been around 6 months, but I'm hoping that our soon-to-be launched blog will help us scale our reach in a big way.

Thanks for writing this! I can always count on your blog to inspire some quality reflection on what we need to do (or not do) to get to the next level.

Great post Alex.

Regarding #5: I think the problem most founders face, especially first time founders without any kind of track record, is that quality advisors have no interest in getting involved with an early stage startup. They're strapped for time, so unless you already have proven traction, or you came away from an exit recently, their reaction is 'why should I care' when founders come knocking at their door.

We have an incredible dude on our board (who you know as well), but when I started building a relationship with him he didn't have the time or interest until we were already past PM fit.
