Thank you Alex for telling your story and sharing your insights. I'm a founder working with a nearshoring company. I've already had two co-founders (and two gargantuan pivots). Fortunately, both the co-founders and the pivots transitioned peacefully and amicably.

So, I've already made the decision and I'm glad I did. This agency feels the ownership of the Inara product almost like I do. They make sensible, economical, and wise choices. A side note from my experience: a Western Hemisphere nearshore company will likely intuit accurately what you want even if you don't state it explicitly, whereas an offshore company may build exactly what you tell them to build, even if its not exactly what you want.

Your article provides me with some some equanimity and a sense that I'm doing all right without a tech co-founder and will be well-positioned for the right one, at the right time. That person will truly get it--what we at Inara do. You only pay for what you read, one page at a time. When the page turns, the author earns. Cheers

Really interesting read. It's like the chicken and egg debate. There is no right or wrong, benefits to both routes and every app idea is different. The key if going agency is choosing the right one. As an agency ourselves we have had many of clients come to us that have been burnt by other developers claiming they could produce what they couldn't, and rightly they are nervous and sceptical. But the right agency will spend the time to thoroughly get to know your vision, ask the right questions and will care as much as co-founder.

We've written out 10 cents on this subject from our expereinces as an agency.

I and 2 of my friends started working on a marketplace startup. But both of them left due to differences between them.
I was left with a half designed product, no investors and no money of my own to get it developed.
I tried Cofounders lab, Angellist and quora but failed to find a cofounder.

So I created a cummunity on fb called Cofounders on Sweat Equity.
I found Cofounders for my venture here, went from an idea to an MVP, helped others find Cofounders and this community has more than 5200
and growing organically.

So you paid a lot but about as much as you expected to, you launched quickly enough, they
put in their all, with a huge amount of attention to "branding exercises" and "every aesthetic detail". As a result, you got a great writeup calling your app "beautiful" and there was liftoff.

It sounds like the things you liked less about the agency approach were probably the perfect complement to the idea and skills you brought to the table.

If you are looking for a technical cofounder, a tech partner or a
technical developer team for your startup then search no more!
FasterCapital will become the technical cofounder and our internal team
will be responsible for building the whole product from A to Z. We help
non-technical entrepreneurs build a successful technical start-up,
thereby allowing the start-ups founders to focus on other key areas,
such as refining their products/services, focusing on business
development, sales and other important non-technical aspects. We also
help technical entrepreneurs who don’t have the right team to build the
startup. We provide 50% of the money needed in technical development per
equity. So you will find yourself the technical cofounder and secure
half of the money you need. That is why our unique model is called:
co-founding and co-funding. Co-founding means that FasterCapital will
become a technical co-founder for the startup and will build its
products from A-Z. Co-funding means that we will also be ready to invest
50% (or in some cases more) of the capital needed and invest in the
startup (even from the idea stage). Of course acting as a co-founder is
not limited only to development but rather to improving on the startup,
its market, products and how we can improve the chances of the startup
to be successful and generate income.Unlike other incubators,
FasterCapital invests in fewer startups and is ready to commit for a
longer period of time and in multiple rounds of funding. Submit your
startup: Submit here https://fastercapital.com/entrepreneur/joinus.html. Find your tech cofounder now!
