I have several questions. I notice that you have a question about guest posting. I've been blogging for five years and have a lot of content built up, some of it useful and much of it superfluous. Who might you recommend I approach to guest blog, and how do you recommend asking? I did a guest post once for someone, worked hard, but in the end she didn't use it. Even though I used it myself it was very disheartening. Another post I read this week recommended hosting a forum to build your own community and decrease your bounce rate. I don't know anything about doing this. It seems more like blogging 4.0 rather than 2.0. Thanks for your time. I love the opportunity to ask questions.

This reminds me of the highest level of leadership outlined in the book Tribal Leadership. It describes how the most successful people work on building triads, ie when they meet someone they think, who do I know that could help this person? And you make the intro without expecting anything in return. Great book(gets repetitive at end like many) on corporate culture for anyone interested.

Offering something of value to others is actually fun. Trying to figure out what you could do for someone, forces you to actually learn about them, deeper than a 'where do you work' level.

Don't actually want anything in return, besides a friend and a stronger community. Moved full time to a new area and had a tiny group of friends. Met a ton of great people by trying to find ways to contribute to the community: supporting policy initiatives, starting a meetup, etc. I can't believe how welcoming people have been. (So, my tip would be ask everyone you meet what you could do to make your community better! Then do it.)

Thanks for this, Alex.

Second to the "how I launched my blog" post, this is my favorite you've done. Lots of what is in here is in that post also, but this is a hella-condensed and punchy reminder.

Good networking is the ultimate slow play, and I'm finding it takes a regular disciplined habit of asking myself questions just like those you asked above.

As I get better at asking those questions, I find I'm getting in the habit of doing that with everyone. Which is accidentally making me happy as hell! :)
