I think people in a company should also spend their time thinking about other domains. Especially business issues. Are we on the right track? What else can the company do? How can we deliver results faster?

Great post, Alex. It is certainly a lot of hats to wear. But the one I love the most i is not on your list: product developer. While juggling a ton of important tasks every day, keeping two hands on the wheel for product development is critical. I think in most cases, the startup CEO is also the one who came up with the product idea(s), and maintains and develops it. At least for smaller teams.

Great post. Right on the money. As CEO of AnswerDash, I found two other items not quite represented here: (1) raiser of financing, and (2) thought leader / evangelist. I also agree with the “culture guard” comment below. So maybe there are even 13 roles!? Wow. That’s quite a job! 🙂

It’s great to notice most roles are people based – especially critical for start-ups. I’ve noticed some of our most successful clients are great at both sales and financial IQ. But the really successful businesses have fun (eg Virgin).

That is why I recently joined Groove … it’s not just fun – it’s Groovy. I believe it’s Groovy because Alex is … “who loves to build startups and surf” [snip from About the Author].

Thanks for the post. I’ve experienced all the roles you’ve mentioned – but never consistently all at once. They are so true. I’m hoping Groove will help me get in the Groove doing these things so we can just do our thing day in day out.
