Alex as always great content. I had been going back and forth on whether or not I wanted funding for a few months. Some of my mentors said you don't need the money and they were right at the time. I did basically what you talk about here and really got traction. More over through the networking I have met another great mentor and strategic partner and he has asked to invest. So now I have my network, my advisors and now the extra money did come which will only accelerate what we have been doing. You are a great mentor and inspiration via your blog. Thanks!

Another great post Alex. I can be on your blog reading it for hours. The point that stuck with me is when you said - it's totally wrong to ask someone to review your product or for a 15 minute discuss because people are busy. Networking or building long lasting relationships is actually very difficult. I am often pondering about how can I - as someone that is young and not super well connected provide value to others. Writing about people that are ahead, linking to their articles, sharing their posts, recommending their product all come to mind. But there must be more. I really like your tips about sending people ideas, feedback on their product or helpful resources. The question still remains about what can you send people that is physical to stand-out! When I have a cool example and find the answer I'll let you know!

Great posts and comments. I went through the same mental "anguish" as your friend concerning YCombinator. But with so much easily accessible information in books and on the internet these days, we have an incredible advantage compared to even 20-30 years ago.

I have an acquaintance that came to Canada 7 years ago from China with no English to start a business - in fact, she barely speaks English today - and now she spends around 100K per month just on online advertising. She says, with a sly smile, that doing business in North America is "very easy".

I saw a few comments on funding. My acquaintance's advice on seeking investment was that the most important thing investors look for is not necessarily profitability, but a good customer base. I wonder about people's experiences here with that aspect. Do people ever get funding just from ideas at very early stages? Or perhaps to start a business in a proven category?

Another inspiring post Alex! So true about Networking. But that word is so loaded. Try to be genuine, real and helpful to as many people as you can in the bottom line. At one of our startupWeekend events, I remember one of the organizer's saying something like "your job tonight is to try and meet everyone in this room". It seemed like something so simple, but totally struck me. And if you just treat it like being truly interested in other people, which we are since we're out to solve people's problems, then engaging is easy and fun. And you just never know when who you know could come in handy down the road.
