Hey Alex,

Completely agree that consistency is super important. I run a software company which works with startups and has its own startups. We build usable software products.

In my routine, I wake up around 5:30 and then 1.5 hours is kept aside for body and mind. After that it is all about getting kids off to school and getting ready for office for next 1.5 hours. I then keep aside 30 minutes to read some book around my improvement area. On my way to office I listen to some podcast for 20 minutes.

I reach office around 10am. I first work on most important task of the day before checking emails. I check emails around 12 pm.

I really liked the morning routine described in this post. https://benjaminhardy.com/morning-routine-will-save-20-hours-per-week/. Its worth checking out.

Interesting, I totally thought you would've been the type to start every morning with meditation, journaling, and/or surfing... but clearly your system is working for you! In terms of how you tackle work first thing in the morning, do you typically start with your toughest task, or just go down the list of action items in arbitrary order?

For me, my morning routine is all about setting the right tone for the day (barring any unfortunate phone calls, like you mentioned!). That means doing something to get my body moving - whether that be a quick run, lifting weights or even just some stretching. Of course, the normal morning items such as breakfast etc. are all present too.

For those struggling to set a morning routine, my advice is to give yourself something to look forward to at the beginning of your morning routine. Something that will get you excited to get up and out of bed. That could be your favorite breakfast item or even allowing yourself time to watch some of your favorite TV show before work.

I used to hate getting up and immediately having to get to work, so exercising or another activity before the day begins gives me a small "win" and allows me to start the day off on the right foot.

I also work from home and have 2 little ones. I find if I sleep in (which I *can* get away with) that it really disrupts me because I feel rushed and unprepared. Going to bed a decent time so I can get up, have 1+ hour of quality time with my kids and husband, do the morning "take to school" routine and then get home for work, that I feel much more productive and ready for a good work day. Also, after working from home for over 9 years, I found that getting up, getting dressed, doing my hair and makeup like a "real" job, gets me much more in the mood of work than not. There are days I end up staying in my PJ's because I have so much to do, but those days are a struggle, and not feeling put together hinders me a lot. It also makes me ready for anything, like a random "hey let's meet up for lunch" or "whoa I have no meetings for a few hours! I really feel like working from a coffee shop this morning" days.

I find the key to a good morning is one that can be replicated anywhere. Especially helpful if you work remote or freelance, you'll want to set the same tone no matter where you are in the world.
