Awesome post Alex. +1 for both the points. We follow both at our startup. More so the 1st, as we specialize in helping teams/organizations celebrate wins, and we ought to lead by example. This is the core of our startup, we have created a bot for Slack, called Engazify Bot (ai.engazify.com) that does this for you. Helps everyone appreciate their peers and motivates the team. Its fun to use. We use it everyday and the whole team loves it.

"It takes time and commitment to develop that skill, and the traditional office culture doesn’t give us any reason to do that"

That is a good point.
Can you share your experience on how to detect a good remote person while interviewing?

I do think that for large successes with a remote team, you need self-directed, self-motivated people who appreciate the need to align with others on goals. I say this mainly thinking of developers, which is my situation right now, both doing development myself and managing other developers.

The problem is not so new, though. As an entrepreneur, I've always found this sort of problem with managing an outside sales staff. Obviously, some do this with great success. It's always been elusive to me, however. I know that though I can hold a development team together successfully given the right to select the people, I can't do the same thing with a sales staff.
