So glad I stumbled across this post (it was shared in the MicroConf attendee Slack channel). At my company, Harpoon (time tracking & invoicing for freelancers), we have been focused on blogging, with SEO campaigns in the works. Advertising just hasn't brought the ROI we were hoping for, but largely because we have a smaller revenue per user.

I'm glad you called out your outreach campaign (and I just added that article to Pocket to digest here in a bit), I feel that this is something that we have sort of attempted, but need to drive harder. The nice thing about attending MicroConf is that we get the chance to eat meals and hike canyons with the "ballers", now it's time to follow up with those conversations and make stuff happen.

Thanks again for sharing this post. It validated some of our current direction, and has motivated me to stick with the plan.

Another great post, that answers a big question for a lot of us entrepreneurs. After getting some early traction from those things that don't scale (i.e. hustling like crazy) this is the next logical step for many of us. Thanks for the knowledge, man.

Great post! I completely agree that customer development MUST be the first priority, and also a top ongoing priority.

In addition to what's mentioned above, I'd also suggest taking a deep dive into all the possible types of marketing and start experimenting. Different content and different delivery channels attract different personas.

Last time I setup a marketing department (basically from scratch), we built a "learn about us" page with white papers, presentations, data sheets, a link to our blog, testimonials, etc. These content pieces can be delivered via email, social media, press, webinars, in person (trade shows), etc.

We also bought and implemented HubSpot and learned a ton from the HubSpot Academy.

It's not necessary to try everything at once, but it's sub-optimal not to know everything you CAN try upfront.

Alex, thanks for answering my question! It's cool to see your own name pop up in a well-known blog.

For me the biggest take away is this: "Start publishing valuable, interesting and useful content as soon as we possibly can."

I keep hearing this advice echoed by companies and influencers all over the tech space. Content marketing seems to be the biggest thing driving growth these days and it's the one type of marketing you can't start too early. The best thing is it doesn't require special skills (provided you can write) and doesn't cost money.

Now off to go write some blog posts ;)
