The motivation behind companies embracing remote/hybrid work lies in the numerous advantages it offers through workplace flexibility. This shift has prompted them to break away from traditional HR practices and implement new remote work initiatives for their workforce.

One company that has impressively developed tools for these transformations, based on my own experience, is https://www.litespace.io/! They have comprehensively addressed all the requirements for any company aspiring to progress similarly to the 17 companies mentioned here!

Hi Alex, thanks for this post. We just got back from our first distributed company meet up last week, so distributed team culture is top of mind. Appreciate hearing how you guys approach things. Have you found "metrics that are specific to their role" for remote software engineers?

Running a start-up (https://www.tripzuki.com/) focusing on a market largely based in India, it's been astounding to us that the handful of VCs that have approached us have been non-plussed at the idea that we have a remote team based in several countries. It seems like such an obvious solution to us, but they seem to want us all sitting in one big sweatshop in Mumbai or Bangalore.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had this experience with VCs, or is it just typical of India?

Great post Alex! We have remote employees as well. One challenge we do run into is certain teams have a number of local employees in the office and only one remote person. In those cases, we work hard not to let the remote employees feel left out of the culture, but it can be difficult. I like your idea of dedicating 2 minutes of every call to just sharing wins. I will be suggesting this to our teams!

Alex, nice and detailed post, really remote work is a great gift for startups, my self working remotely from couple of years. Though it has its own limitation, but definitely remote work ensures great freedom and productive hours if properly done. But remote work is only for people who is self motivated and can explore on their own.

BTW I have one question, when you recruit a new employee, assume a developer, does Groove provide PC/Laptop etc or employee can use his own personal equipment? if you provide PC/Laptop etc then how logistics are maintained.

In case if employee has freedom to choose his own PC/Laptop, then how you ensure that it has required tools installed for development or testing etc. Are you guys using any automated tools to setup employees laptop remotely?

Sorry if my question was confidential or specific to groove, but just wanted to know how its done. Thanks.

I loved this post! We have a remote team as well so I wanted to chime in on where to find remote employees... because we've found a resource that has worked very well for us over the last few years.

And... this is going to sound like terrible advice, but our best three developers actually came through Elance (now Upwork). One of them has been working with us for the last 2 years. He's fulltime. And he's fantastic! Additionally, our marketing director also started out as one of our freelancers on Elance. She was doing 10 hours per week... then it increased to 20... before we knew it, she had taken on so many projects that hiring her on fulltime was a no-brainer.

When someone introduced us to the idea of going through Elance, we thought it sounded like a terrible idea. But, the really nice part about it (assuming you're down with the remote style of working) is that you can make sure the relationship makes sense from both sides before moving forward with something fulltime. And unlike hiring in the normal way... both you and the employee can "try before you buy"... there's no risk from either end and it makes it easier to jump into bed together. :) Metaphorically. Interview processes can be much shorter. We usually start with a test project and then go from there.

I always feel sort of weird when I explain where we found half of our team... but it's worked for us! :)
