Brilliant post thanks very much for sharing your thoughts. The takeaway I've learnt the most from is:

"The reality that I’ve found to be true is that if you measure people by the work they get done, rather than by the hours they spend on it, your team will accomplish more, not less."

This is great advice I think. So often in an office team members would be sitting at their desks not actually working, if those team members were held accountable to their output it would have made a big difference.

Thanks again!

Hey Alex!

Haven't been around for a while but wanted to drop in and weigh in on this because I find your success with the remote structure at Groove really intriguing. My favorite part of this post was your recognizing that the very foundation of an office being "good for productivity" is that it's "good for productivity" for *some people*.

Which, of course leads right into your point about everyone having different environments they function best in. I think a hybrid would be wonderful, personally (working within the city as we do here at Responster, but perhaps having remote days as an option throughout the week).

Great food for thought, anyways!

Great post Alex. As you said, remote teams have their challenges but by not leveraging remote teams, you miss the opportunity to hire the best talent wherever they are (because they cannot easily move). I have seen many organizations adopting hybrid approach too with reasonable success. Solid communication is very important no matter what model you follow. Some customers of my product proudfolio.com make heavy usage of video and other effective knowledge sharing & collaboration methodologies to ensure no one feels left out due to location. Thanks!

Having started part-week remote working last year, I can clearly see where the basis of many of the arguments come from. It's something that I've had to come to grips with overtime - particularly ensuring a mental and physical break from working all the time.

Indeed, I am still concerned about the issue of others, who don't remote work, thinking that I am not working enough.

Nice post, I agree working remotely I guess it all depends on the industry in which one works in. Obviously not all industries can work from home but as technology advances we find that working remotely will be more common.

This is a great post Alex, we work remote as well and really love the balance. We always wondered about the in-person meetings, but you're right -w ho needs those sometimes, they just get in the way of making a decision! Appreciate the perspective!

I found this list to be useful for my transition from a strict office environment to working on a remote team. The concerns that others have raised to your previous posts on this subject aren't without merit, as you acknowledged, and are for me hurdles that I'm having to overcome. My sources for distraction aren't online anymore, they're in my home. Sleeping in and spending more time cooking have wasted so much of my time. I'd love to read your advice for individuals (rather than full teams) to adapt to a remote team lifestyle.
