I have to call BS on the "Tools Don’t Make the Difference" line.

There are tools out there that really make all the difference. Especially for marketers who don't have a lot of experience.

Writing stuff like this seems like absolutist nonsense

Great post. I had a conversation with another local entrepreneur the other day. We were talking about product management tools.

When I was working as a full-time product manager I tried every single product management tool on the market.

I realize that all of them ended up being distractions. They made me feel busy without actually getting the hard work done, talking to people and negotiating priorities.

That's not to knock those tools some of them are really good. What I ended up using was a combination of Google Docs and a Google sheet. This had everything I needed to score and prioritize features.

Then we ended up building out requirements in Confluence and JIRA.

Alex, all of the above tools are working great for me except Wordpress, though I am not new to CMSs, from few years I am using Rails framework for development purpose.

But to save time I thought I can use Wordpress for one of my new blog, but this time my experience with Wordpress is not so great, using workpress I was able to setup blog quickly but lot of time was going in maintenance and it was eating up all of my server resources ( VPS with 4GB RAM), apart from this there were several issues.
So I had to roll out my own blogging system. I know its not perfect and may not be wise decision, but now I have only required features and website loadtime improved a lot.

Hey @alex,

Great post. This is key for people just starting out in content marketing. I've been so busy trying to find the latest and greatest apps instead of banging out useful content for our users.

Guess I've gotta stop kicking the can down the road

Pretty cool article Alex. From my experience, when a blog goes from anything to Wordpress there is always a considerable boost in organic traffic.

Any reason for having your blog hand-coded instead of WP?

P.S. As someone else said, I'd love to see your step-by-step process from topic inception to creating the actual piece.

Keep it up!

4. "And the best way to leverage your content traffic into real business growth is to first turn your visitors into email subscribers."

This is not always true! If you can make people signup in good numbers, prioritize that over email subscribers like Buffer does: https://blog.bufferapp.com/grow-an-email-list-question-mark

Awesome post, @alex_turnbull:disqus !

Completely agree with you about the basic functionalities needed to implement a good content marketing strategy. However, using 5 different tools from day one can make the process complex and definitely not ready to scale.

We have been working on something that could not only do all of the above but also centralize and automate some manual tasks (such as publishing on your blog and distributing on social media, or scheduling everything on the same calendar or customizing and keep tracking of your content in different stages of the workflow): contentools.com

The few Content Marketing Platforms out there were focusing on Fortune1k companies, and that was making it impossible for startups and SMBs to have access. We are focusing on the needs of companies like yours and ours! ;)

Would love to get your perspective about it, considering you are responsible for one of my favorite blogs: www.contentools.com

I went to SumoMe to check it out. The first thing they do is hit you with a "sign up to try it free" form. I don't know much about it and won't waste an hour of my life trying it out without knowing considerably more then, well, nothing. One thing I would absolutely need to see first is pricing. I generally don't want to tell people my email address who don't want to tell me their prices. I also, again, don't want to waste my time on something I can't afford anyway. They seem to think my time is worth less then their innovative marketing efforts.

I do love your blog though. Good work!
