At Retrium, we solved this problem by offering a MINIMUM day off policy. In other words, because we value employees taking vacation, we require you to take a certain number of days every year. But because we trust you, we also let you take as much you need. Wrote a blog post about it a few years back: https://blog.retrium.com/minimum-days-off-and-establishing-a-culture-of-trust. Interested in your thoughts!

Alex, this sounds good, but while coming to actual practice the situations are the opposite. every. single. time :-( it is sad but as you said measures are on but it is not that easy at all. it is always a difficult choice when you have customers pouring in for attention during their holidays!

This is so relevant to me right now, thank you! Thankfully where I work, we value vacation time and for the most part, have an unlimited vacation policy. This is a good reminder to me to actually TAKE the vacation and step away from the laptop while I'm "off work", though. Thanks, Alex!

I agree - I encourage our employees to take time off and re-charge. Do you have an unlimited vacation policy Alex? If so, would be interested to hear how that's going.

Merry Xmas!

Another option is to do what companies have done for years -- give people x weeks off each year, be generous, and expect them to take it.

My wife is an HR professional in the tech space, so I know that the idea of unlimited vacation is an attractive one. People imagine taking off whenever they like and taking 6+ weeks off each year. The reality is much different. When you aren't given x amount of vacation days that you're expected to take, you may feel pressure from "go getters" to skip out on vacation days. Chances are, you'll take the same amount of time off or less when compared to whatever vacation days you would have been given.

An added benefit to employers is that when you don't give each employee x number of vacation days each year, you don't need to pay out unused days when they quit, get laid off, or don't use them all up. Project: Time Off says this saves companies an average of $1,898 per employee.

I could see a happy medium, if the employer is truly interested in their employees taking a break and not using "unlimited" as a ploy, being a blended policy. Each employee gets x weeks off that they are expected to take (whatever is normal in non-unlimited vacation day companies), plus they can take more time off should they wish to have it.

This would make "unlimited vacation" a true benefit without any catches.

My company also does unlimited vacation policy. A big thing for me as an individual contributor is seeing what my manager and other Director level and above folks do. Those folks set the tone for the rest of the company, so no matter how much they say "It's perfectly fine! Take time off!" if they don't do it themselves then it makes it harder for the people under them to feel okay doing it.

This is complicated by the fact that those high level positions often do work more, and feel like they need to work more than everyone else usually. Open communication and leading by example are the two best solutions I've experienced.
